‘Ainakea takes place in West Maui in 1953. Hawai’i is a territory and the plantation economy still shapes Maui’s landscape and daily life. However, as Hawaiʻi edges toward statehood and the old plantation order begins to change, the social world that had grown up around it is changing too.

The fictional Goodale family—descendants of early missionaries and longtime owners of a sugar plantation called ‘Ainakea—is running out of money. Amanda Goodale returns to the family estate, and as various relatives, friends, and plantation workers gather around her to help her confront the future, everyone can see that the island is transforming, but no one can agree about what should come next.

The Goodales’ private crisis unfolds against that larger island story: who should be the stewards of the land? The play addresses issues of labor, wealth, Hawaiian identity, memory, class, family, and the uncertain promise of progress, in a story told with humor, nostalgia, and a keen sense of Maui in the early 1950s.
